Kevin Chou

Edward R. Clark Chair of Advanced Manufacturing in Industrial Engineering

Dr. Kevin Chou is the Edward R. Clark Chair of Advanced Manufacturing in J.B. Speed School of Engineering's Industrial Engineering Department. He has more than 15 years' experience working on innovative projects in the public and private sectors.

His areas of focus include:

  • Design and manufacturing;
  • CAD/CAM;
  • Mechanics;
  • Metrology;
  • And materials.

More specifically, Dr. Chou is interested in integrated materials, design and manufacturing innovations, including metal additive manufacturing, metal matrix composite machining, and diamond coatings. His research has been supported by NASA, NSF, DoC, and DoD, etc., as well as private sectors and foundations including General Motors, Vista Engineering, CFD Research Corp., and Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).

Dr. Chou joined the University of Louisville in January 2017, after previously having served as a professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Alabama.  He has more than 15 years' experience in advanced manufacturing, including stints at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the National Chung Cheng University (Taiwan) and the National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST).

Most recently, Dr. Chou was Assistant Director for Technology in the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO) of U. S. Department of Commerce, where he supported the newly established Manufacturing U.S.A. program (formerly known as the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation).

Dr. Chou is a recent recipient of the Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award from SME's Rapid Technologies & Additive Manufacturing Community, and his group has published more than 130 refereed articles and made about 100 technical presentations, as well as more than 40 invited seminars.

He also is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and currently serves on the Executive Committee of ASME's Manufacturing Engineering Division. Among other accomplishments, he serves as an adviser for the organization's Additive Manufacturing Certificate Program and chaired its flagship manufacturing conference, the Technical Program of the International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC), in 2011.

Dr. Chou earned his doctorate in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University, and did his post-doctoral training at NIST.
