Singular optics is a contemporary branch from optics and photonics, where recent developments in optics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and topology converge.
Our scope is focused on phase singularities, also known as optical vortices or screw dislocations; these singularities are located where the field intensity is null and phase is undefined. Currently, there is growing interest in analog and digital techniques appropriation for phase singularities generation, synthesis and analysis in optical fields; applications, statistic and physical properties are studied as well.
The presentation includes description of phase singularities in optical speckle fields. Speckle fields are obtained by the coherent superposition from independent contributions associated with the dispersive loci from a diffusive surface. From these fields complex-valued function are assigned by using linear integral transforms. This seminar introduces some challenges of the optical vortex related techniques in image processing and presents an application to evaluate the process of ...paint drying.

Daniel Sierra is a Physics Engineer from EAFIT University at Medellin, Colombia. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Science, School of Physics at National University of La Plata, Argentina. He is currently a visiting lecturer/researcher in the Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department CECS at University of Louisville. His research interest includes Signal Processing, Computer vision and Computer Imaging.
