Data Mining and analysis

Data mining helps companies sift through sometimes huge amounts of data for patterns and actionable information. This could reveal trends that will allow your business to cut costs, increase revenue or improve efficiency or safety. 

This can be applied for a variety of industries, for example: 

  • Manufacturing, where data on productivity can be used to improve processes;
  • Retail, where data on customers can be used to target advertising;
  • And service providers, such as those who provide utilities, who can use data to improve use efficiency. 

At the University of Louisville, we are researching the collection and analysis of data from many different sources and perspectives. The Datamining Lab at U of L is working to collect data, categorize it and translate it into understandable, actionable terms. 

We also offer personalization for a variety of industries. The Knowledge Discovery and Web Mining Lab at U of L studies data, web and stream data mining, including analysis and personalization for multiple purposes, including: 

  • E-Commerce;
  • Social Media;
  • And User Behavior.


    Visualization and Modeling

    There’s more than one way to tell a story. And sometimes, the stories gleaned from analyzing data are best told visually. 

    At the University of Louisville, our experts can help interpret your data using 3-D visualization and high-performance computation. Our Visualization and Intensive Graphics (VaIG) Lab is exploring how this can be applied for a variety of purposes, from visualizing medical data and bioinformatics to designing computer games. 


    Bioinformatics and Biostatistics 

    Data can also be used to improve health and medical science through bioinformatics and biostatistics. The University of Louisville also operates a Statistical Consulting Center, where faculty and staff provide expertise in statistical data analysis for our research, as well as for other health care organizations, research centers, businesses and non-profits. 

    The consulting services we provide include:

    • Experimental design;
    • Power and sample size calculation;
    • Data management;
    • Statistical data analysis and modeling;
    • And technical report writing. 

    Our consultants are available for both short term consulting projects and long-term collaborative research, serving as investigators and key personnel on grant proposals and providing assistance with protocol development.

    They have expertise in a variety of methods for biostatistical applications, including bioinformatics, and have extensive experience in SAS and open-source 'R' software packages.
